Computers form a staple part of today s society and for many adults who grew up without this technology, keeping up can prove. difficult. However, thanks to a dedicated and award-winning group of seniors, this no longer need be the case. SeniorNet, an initiative of Ipswich City Council, was formed in 1995 to offer over 50's a range of affordable computer training courses. As part of Adult Learner, week earlier this month, the team at SeniorNet were awarded an Outstanding Provider Award for exceptional achievement in adult learning. SeniorNet liaison Development officer Vi Jorgensen said the project received .State and Commonwealth support and was proving popular with seniors, with 160 members currently enjoying the classes “Our adage is we are seniors helping seniors.
We have been doing this for nine years now, so we are very efficient and can expertly respond to the needs of adult learners," Mrs. Jorgensen said. "'.'that makes SeniorNet so special is the fact our trainers have all been at the stage where they lacked computer skills and therefore understand how difficult that can be. "This is reflected in the program as we understand that new skills need to be reinforced and brought slowly before the students. We use a digital projector in our classes and we also have extra tutors to provide individual attention. It is a very, co-operative environment where everyone helps each other. Apart from the training workshops, SeniorNet also organizes functions and social gatherings for its members. Classes are conducted at the iTel Rooms, upstairs in the Ipswich Mall, above Bendigo Bank.

Seniors interested in learning about computers, the Internet, word processing, or just keeping up with the latest technology can call membership officer Barbara De Leeuw on 3818 6870.
