ASCCA's Portable Training Laboratory

Participants at Bulli workshop using laptops

For training budding computer users on the road, ASCCA has a mobile Learning Kit which consists of laptops with a network switch to link them all via LAN cables, plus the necessary accessories. This enables the tutor to link all the machines into a small local network. Using a control package known as AB Tutor, the tutor can broadcast his/her screen to all the other computers, thus allowing watchers to see exactly where the mouse is travelling and what is happening in the drop-down menus.

The purchase of our first Mobile Learning Centre was made possible by a grant from the Baxter Charitable Foundation. An additional set of equipment and the cost of providing several regional/rural training workshops have been funded by the auDA Foundation Pty Ltd and this additional MLK includes a data projector and screen and computers using Microsoft Vista as the Operating System. This additional equipment will be invaluable as we seek to take training to seniors in regional and rural areas of Australia.

This valuable training equipment has been used in a number of venues already, including Bega, Bulli, Hanging Rock, Muswellbrook, Parramatta, Dubbo, Petersham, Newcastle and Bateman’s Bay. As a direct result of these workshops four new seniors computer Clubs have been established and a steering committee is working the establishment of a fifth club.
