How did we ever have time to go to work?
How will you celebrate Volunteers Week, which runs from 14th - 20th May? Following on
from last years’ theme of “Change the World”, the theme for this year is; “See the Change”.
A large number of our members have wide ranging interests and volunteer to help the local
and wider communities in many ways by contributing unselfishly with their time and energy.
Many of the people who volunteer for their computer club also volunteer for the other
organisations in which they have an interest – so many of our seniors are not just joiners –
they are contributors.
In fact many of our people originally joined their computer club to learn skills they wanted
as volunteers in other areas of their lives. Some wanted to learn Excel so they could
become the treasurer of another organisation; or to learn Publisher so they could prepare a
newsletter for their Church or another club; or to learn Word so they could type the minutes
for a charity, church, social or sporting organisation.
Most have gone on to discover many other exciting ways they could have fun with their
computers as well as performing these practical tasks; and hundreds have gone on to
volunteer as tutors and helpers in many ways in their computer club.
It would be impossible to assess the number of volunteers involved in our ASCCA member
clubs, which now number 111 throughout Australia.
As educators it has often been our joy to “See the Change” when we have helped our peers
learn new skills to transform their lives and open up new opportunities. By sharing our time
and skills with others we contribute to their wellbeing and improve their lives as well as our
own.
How did any of us ever have time to go to work five days a week?

9th Australian Computer Conference for Seniors
This year the Conference will be held on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th August and planning is well
under way for our most exciting Conference yet. The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney has been
booked as the venue and the Governor of NSW, Professor Marie Bashir AC, CVO has accepted an
invitation to open the Conference. The Hon. Kristina Keneally, MP, Minister for Ageing has agreed to
be a keynote speaker. There will be more news on the topics and presenters closer to the time,
however, invitations have already been extended to some interesting speakers on topics of interest
to our members.
The Powerhouse Museum was the venue earlier this year for the Microsoft Unlimited Potential
Conference. Those of you lucky enough to attend will appreciate how excited ASCCA is to be able to
have the use of this excellent facility for our own Conference.
As usual our members will be invited to attend both days of the Conference, or just one of the days if
that suits their schedule better.
Mark 27th and 28th August in your Diary now - we look forward to seeing you there.
