The OPEN (Older Persons Electronic Network)Seniors Computer Club started in 2001 as a twice weekly two hour project conducted in a bare room with superseded donated Mac computers and borrowed plastic chairs. Six years and a number of grants later, OPEN has grown to be a multi-faceted program offering computer technology training and support for men and women over 50.
Individual help is available in small group sessions, which are offered every week day. A program for beginners and advanced PC and Mac computer users includes email and Internet familiarity, word processing and desk top publishing, use of printers and scanners, as well as special interest topics such as family history online, graphics and digital photography.
The management team, tutors and assistants in this club run by seniors for seniors are volunteers who average 500 hours' service a year.
The OPEN Centre is a friendly place where older people can learn among others of their own age.
The annual OPEN $15 (single)/ $20 (couple) membership fee includes a subscription to the sponsor Launceston Computer Group Inc.
LCG membership brings benefits, which include monthly evening presentations and an emailnewsletter.
A new service is a volunteer ICT outreach program, VICTOR, for OPEN members who have problems using their home computers.
