HISTORY OF CLUB:
The Broadwater Computer group was formed on 15th November, 2001 following a meeting of interested residents from the Broadwater Court Retirement Village. Approximately twenty residents attended this inaugural meeting at which it was resolved to conduct further meetings with a view to fostering and furthering the residents’ knowledge of and their use of personal computers.
The next meeting was held on the 14th February, 2002. The meeting was addressed by Mr David Braunstein, Coordinator for the COTA (NSW) Seniors IT Projects.
From this point on monthly meetings of members were held at which guest speakers on relevant subjects addressed the meetings.
During 2004, there was move to obtain support from the village operator to fund the purchase of some personal computer systems to enable an education program for members to be started. November 2004 saw the grant of $5000 by the village operators to fund the purchase of refurbished computers for Works Ventures IT and the supply of all the necessary software from Microsoft under the terms of their Unlimited Potential program.
The equipment was purchased, the software was received from Microsoft, trainers were trained and the self paced education program commenced on 11th March, 2005.
Our installation consists of a network of seven systems and three free standing systems. The network operates an ADSL broadband connection to the internet. All systems operate under Microsoft Windows XP Professional and run Microsoft Works 8 as well as Microsoft Office Professional 2003. They utilise Vet antivirus software as well protection programs for spyware and adware.
The group offers training in Works, Office and the Internet to members and regular classes are scheduled for Thursdays and Fridays of each week.
To date sixty or more residents have received training via our program.
During 2005 and 2006 our membership has risen to around eighty members and this represents a ratio of one in every five residents in our retirement village is a member of the group.
We continue to have monthly meetings where we have a program of interesting guest speakers.
Our group has become an integral part of the life of our retirement village and we contribute to mental health of our members.
