A public meeting sponsored by ASCCA was held on January 22, 2007 and as a result, a steering committee of local residents was elected and the Computer Club formed. The club is auspiced by the Muswellbrook Senior Citizens Association.
The Club is open to all seniors aged 50 plus and requires them to be a member of both the Muswellbrook Senior Citizens and the Seniors Computer Club. As at March 09 we have over 80 members.
We have a training room consisting of six donated computers, two printers and an internet connection all operating on a network. Training is conducted in three two hour blocks every week on a Tuesday and Wednesday and we extend this to Thursday when required. Training is generally aimed at helping members solve whatever issues they want. Issues can be any mix of basic training, photos, word processing, internet, family tree, slide scanning etc, etc.
It certainly keeps our member tutors well and truly on their toes, and it's a poor day when a tutor doesn't learn something new in the process. We have found that this ad-hoc training together with a mixture of training from the excellent ASCCA manuals seems to suit our seniors best.
In 2008 we were fortunate to receive a grant from Telstra to conduct internet training for seniors and we are currently starting a second round of this training. The first round was very warmly received. We have also been very fortunate with donations of computers and equipment from local businesses.
