Bega Public Forum and E-Security Training

Participants at E-Safety training session

Public Forum

On Monday morning, October 23, 25 people gathered to discuss the formation of a computer club for seniors in the Bega Valley area. Participants came from Bega, Tathra, Merimbula, Tura Beach and Pambula. Some were active in other organisations such as U3A. The experience of participants varied from those who did not own a computer through to those who had worked with computers prior to retirement.

The general view was that a computer club for Bega Valley would be a great idea. However, a club has not yet been formed.

After a similar public meeting in Bateman's Bay in 2007, a Seniors Computer Users Group has been formed in the Eurobodalla. See EUROSCUG for more information.

E-Security training

After lunch, ASCCA's Training Officer, Peter Stanhope gave an overview of Safety on the Internet, and then held two hands on training sessions with 10-12 participants in each session.

For these sessions, Peter set up ASCCA's portable training laboratory, consisting of 12 networked laptops. These were connected to the SERTEC Centre's broadband service.

The purchase of the Mobile Learning Centre was made possible by a grant from the Baxter Charitable Foundation and will be invaluable as we seek to take training to seniors in regional and rural areas of Australia.

Further information about staying safe on the web can be found on the Microsoft UPdate Newsletter No 7.

ASCCA ran a similar workshop at Bulli in Wollongong in the same week.
